Study shows SwimCount gives equivalent results to laboratory analysis
Male fertility is measured according to several parameters (WHO 5th ed., 2010). Nevertheless, the single most predictive parameter is the concentration of progressive motile sperm cells (PMSCs). According to the WHO, for a couple to achieve a pregnancy within 1 year, the semen should contain at least 5 million PMSCs per ml.
A multi-centre trial performed in Spain, Turkey and Denmark has just been published, comparing the SwimCount home test kit with conventional laboratory sperm analysis. The study concluded that SwimCount results gave excellent agreement (95%) with lab results and the home test could offer couples a simple and reliable way to find out whether male infertility could be a factor if there are problems conceiving.
The key difference between SwimCount and other home tests for male infertility is that SwimCount specifically measures the PMSCs and not immotile or dead sperm cells that may be detected in other tests.
